In Season - Strawberries
According to British Summer Fruits, a growers' association, the berry season officially starts on May 1 and lasts until the end of September. Which means it has officially started Yippee!
Yia-sas (Hello) from a sunny Kalamata
As I write this newsletter I’m sitting in a sunny garden in what is to be my home for the next month. The house is slightly eccentric and a little cluttered but I am sure we are going to love staying in it. Not least because of the fabulous quirky outside space which has protection from not just the sun but the rain which is lucky as our first day was rather stormy.
I’m certainly getting a taste of summer and happy to say good bye to heavier dishes until next winter. Back in the UK, 20 years ago the British strawberry season lasted a mere 6 weeks, but now lasts 6 months, because 90% of British crops are now grown in polytunnels, allowing the season to be extended.
So now it has just begun and as summer approaches, we can look forward to strawberries becoming more plentiful, less expensive and even more delicious as the season gets into full swing.
But it's not just we Brits who love them, Americans eat an average of three-and-a-half pounds (1.6kg) of fresh strawberries per person each year and quite a lot of frozen strawberries too.
California produces some 80% of the strawberries sold in the U.S. It produces about 2 billion fruits each year. But every state in the U.S., as well as every province in Canada, has strawberry producers.
On Only Crumbs Remain I have put together a collection of over 30 strawberry recipes from both myself and other top food bloggers so you can be spoilt for choice for recipes using them once you have had enough of eating them just as they are.
I have also republished my recipe for Strawberry Baked Alaska having updated and extended it to include helpful step-by-step pictures.
I’m also updating my strawberry yogurt lollies which are very easy to make and very refreshing the new version of the recipe will be published next week.
That’s all for now until next time
Have a delicious week.
Strawberry Baked Alaska
You may think that Baked Alaska recipes are only for the foolhardy or those feeling brave. Really brave! After all, who in their right mind puts ice cream into a hot oven?
But it's actually surprisingly easy to make and certainly has the wow factor. The billowy marshmallow acts as insulation, so the ice cream just doesn't melt in the short time that the dessert is cooking.
