In Season ...... Tomatoes
The British tomato season in full swing, so you can expect to find a wide variety of locally grown, flavourful tomatoes at their peak freshness in markets and stores. Or maybe you are growing your own
Hello
Do you grow your own tomatoes? I’ve tried in the past but never had great success. Either we are not around to water them at the critical time or we have a damp summer and they get Blight. But I know a lot of my readers do grow their own sucessfully and so at this time of year my Easy tomato chutney is usually the most popular recipe on Recipes Made Easy. It one of my favourite chutneys so I wish I did grow my own, nevertheless if I spot some bargain tomatoes at the market then I will buy a bagfull and make it anyway.
I find making preserves very satisfying and rewarding. But if its not your thing there are still lots of lovely recipes you can make with tomatoes now while they are at their tastiest.
Of course there is a simple tomato salad or Greek salad is ideal but you can have too much salad especially when the summer is not at its best, like this year. Pasta is a good choice and I have two pasta dishes which use fresh tomatoes. Although they are similar, one uses uncooked tomatoes and the other gently roasts them, they are totally different in character. Try them both and tell me which one you like the best. I can’t make up my mind.
And fresh tomatoes make great soup especially if you roast them first. My roast tomato soup is delicious served hot or cold. So that has all weathers covered!
And if you have a big glut you could always make my really easy tomato sauce with fresh tomatoes instead of canned. It freezes well and can be used on pasta pizza or as a base for other sauce or try one of my other tomato recipes. There’s lots of choice.
Have a tasty week.
