Magnificant marmalade and other citrus delights

Rather like marmite, marmalade seems to be something you love or hate. I fall very clearly into the love it group. Which camp are you in?

Last year, I didn’t make any marmalade due in part to breaking my wrist, which curtailed my cooking for a while. I also thought I had made sufficient the year before to see me through, but horrors of horrors, I ran out somewhere around September. I love my homemade marmalade, so boy, have I missed it!

I had planned on making a batch as soon as possible to satisfy my craving for the stuff. With the marmalade-making season finally upon us, I ordered some Seville oranges for this week but cooking is limited as I am still without a fully functioning kitchen. More about that next week in my look behind the scenes. So, I have to wait another week before I can have some of that delicious orange gold, spread on my morning toast.

It's not just Seville oranges that are in season at the moment. Most citrus fruits are at their most plentiful and best just now. So, I thought I would share a few other citrus recipes with you too this week. There is nothing quite like it for bringing some sunshine into our winter.

Another diary-free cake, Almond Bizcocho - a delicious moist Spanish almond and orange cake with a fabulous colour and great flavour and is so very easy to make.

My Orange and Almond Polenta cake is an older recipe of mine in need of some new photos to do it justice. There are a quite a few steps to making it but the hard work is well rewarded with a fabulous gluten free cake that is well worth the effort.

Rich and creamy with a hint of gin my Lemon and Gin Tart takes a classic lemon tart and turns it into a treat that is even more delicious.

This Seville Orange Tart is another twist on the classic French Tart au Citron. A hazelnut pastry is filled with a delicious tangy orange custard made from Seville oranges and decorated with slices of blood orange and chopped toasted hazelnuts.

Homemade lemon curd is easy to make and results in a wonderful, fresh and zingy curd which is not only delicious on toast but also lifts a host of different bakes. Alternatively you could make Blood Orange Curd which would work equally well using Seville oranges.
